We'd like to recommend "Affordable Plumbing & Remodeling" of Cedar Rapids for the kitchen addition on our home at 1933 Grande Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, which was built during fall of 2003. In particular we appreciate the work of Mr. Scott Utzinger who served us as both our project manager and our design architect.
Our house was the 2nd built in the Bever Park Addition in 1917. It's sited on an extra large lot, has several large shade trees and was built to a quality standard which new homes seldom meet. We're quite proud of it. But while a wonderful home, its kitchen was too small for our needs. We wanted a larger kitchen but would not tolerate an addition that looked "tacked on". It had to be architecturally appropriate. Our assignment to Scott Utzinger was "It can't look like an addition it has to look like "it's always been there."
Scott took that assignment and created a beautiful addition. It is in perfect proportion to, and captures the dimensions and details of our original home.
Scott arranged for all the subcontractors and did a fine job overseeing their work. Scott showed particularly good judgment in picking Kula Construction for the exterior construction. Kula had the patience and keen eye needed to make a seamless extension to our 85 year old home.
In many regard the workmanship far exceeded our expectations. For example, the interior carpentry of Kitchen & Bath Images Rick Skersick proves that point. Rick beautifully matched the design of the stairway, ceiling molding and baseboard trim or the original house. From a magazine picture, alone, Rick was able to build a window bench seat that's everything we could have asked for.
For us, the "deciding factors" in contracting with Affordable Plumbing & Remodeling were the personal impressions made both by Affordable Plumbing & Remodeling president Don Karr and Scott Utzinger.
Affordable Plumbing & Remodeling is a family business and a small enough company that Don Karr can (and does) closely follow what's going on with his customers' jobs. He takes the reputation of his company very seriously.
Scott Utzinger, in addition to his excellent design plan, showed many other talents. We most appreciated his attentiveness to what we had to say, his quick mind and his clever solutions to many problems. If we made a commitment to us he kept it. When something went wrong on the job, he was a good enough person to admit it, explain it and do his best to make it right. We learned that we could count on him. Finally we found Scott to have an engaging personality and we like him very much.
